Ayurveda is the holistic natural healing science, which originated in India, more than 10,000 years ago, making it the oldest healthcare system in the world. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word with ‘ayur’, meaning ‘longevity’ or ‘life’, and ‘veda’ meaning ‘science’ . Ayurveda is therefore, a unique natural science, which is the knowledge of the connection between nature and the human body. The knowledge of Ayurveda has been transferred orally through a lineage of sages in India, until it was assimilated into text around five thousand years ago. The oldest among these texts/treatises are Charaka Samhita, Sushrutra Samhita , Astanga Hrudaya, and Astanga Hridayam. As per Ayurveda, each human being is influenced differently by the five elements – earth, water, air, fire, and space – according to theirs ‘prakriti’ or natural constitution, which is again categorized into doshas or body humors, as follows
Ayurveda places great emphasis on keeping these natural elements in balance as any imbalance in these leads to ailments and illnesses. Ayurveda believes that for the human body, mind, and spirit, all supplementations and solutions are available in nature, and everyone can use natural resources to find balance and enhance one’s life.
Interestingly there are traces to suggest that Ayurveda was in practice in the Indus Valley civilization and medicinal plants like amla , ashwagandha, bael, tulsi, sandalwood, ginger, turmeric, pepper, cinnamon, etc. were used for treatments. In the ‘Sushruta Samhita’, the physician Sushruta, while compiling the knowledge of Ayurveda, includes chapters describing surgical training, instruments and procedures. These instances are remarkable in suggesting how deep the knowledge of Ayurveda was, even in such an ancient period.
Returning to today’s times, most modern day diseases are caused due to a lack of balance in ones lifestyle. And this can easily be attained through Ayurveda , which in turn leads to reduced diseases and a longer, healthier life . Ayurveda believes that the immune system is the greatest healer of the human body, and strengthening it can protect and cure all diseases naturally, with the right food and supplementation . Imbalances in body are caused by physical and mental imbalances in an individual. With its holistic healing practice, Ayurveda treats imbalances with specific food, routine, practices, and management of stress. In Ayurvedic terms, health and wellness mean a balance of the physical and mental systems, and the balance of interaction between our system and nature.
Ayurveda, with its traditional ancient wisdom surpasses the modern system of medicine, because it has a health oriented approach, while modern medicine largely has a disease –oriented approach.
