Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland does not produce enough essential thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body resulting in an underactive thyroid.  The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck that releases crucial hormones to help the body manage and use energy. The symptoms of hypothyroidism often go unnoticed in the early stages but can cause several health issues if left untreated. Symptoms such as fatigue, excessive weight gain or obesity, joint pain, muscle weakness, increased sensitivity to cold, infertility, heart disease, etc may ensue with this condition. People above 60 years of age and women, in general, have a higher chance of developing hypothyroidism.
