Low Metabolism

Low Metabolism

Metabolism refers to the physical and chemical processes in the body that convert energy. Metabolism is a biochemical process that goes on all the time to keep our body functioning and alive and involves processes like breathing, food digestion, cell repairing etc. Thus, the body requires energy to run these functions which is known as Basal Metabolic Rate and slow metabolism means slow BMR. BMR is essentially the amount of energy you body needs to survive.

Slow metabolism, mainly depends on our age, genetics, body size and type, level of physical activity, medications, gender, stress, hormonal imbalance, poor nutrition, obesity, chronic diseases, hypothyroidism, diabetes etc.

The main causes of slow metabolism are:
1. Changes in insulin level
2. Hypothyroidism
3. Low oestrogen or testosterone
4. Increasing age
5. Muscle to fat ratio in the body is not adequate and there is excess fat
6. Allopathic Medicines
7. Eating fewer calories than the body requires or calorie deficit.

People with an exceptionally fast metabolism can eat anything, any time without any regret and without putting on extra kilos or pounds. They have more stamina, beautiful skin and toned muscles. Only few people are blessed to have a naturally fast metabolism because it also depends on our genetic profile.

However, there are certain ways to fix the issue of slow metabolism. These are: regular exercise, green tea, lifting heavy things, prefer standing work more than sitting desk work etc. Choosing spicy food can also increase your metabolism due to the presence of capsaicin in chillies.
