Thyroid disease or disorders is a general term for a medical condition in which the thyroid gland is unable to produce the right amount of hormones essential for healthy body functioning. The thyroid that is located at the front of the neck, regulates numerous metabolic processes throughout the body. Different types of thyroid disorders affect the thyroid’s structure or function which may range from a small, harmless goitre (enlarged gland) that requires no treatment to life-threatening cancer. Additionally, insufficient thyroid hormone production which is known as hypothyroidism, and too much thyroid hormone production known as hyperthyroidism, are some of the most common thyroid problems besides thyroiditis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Fatigue, restlessness, weight gain or weight loss are some of the common symptoms associated with thyroid disease. Women are more likely to have thyroid diseases, especially right after pregnancy and menopause.
