Bay Leaf, known as Tej Patta in Hindi, is an aromatic culinary and medicinal herb derived from the Laurus nobilis tree, native to the Mediterranean region. It is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Lauraceae family and has been cultivated for thousands of years for its distinctive fragrance and therapeutic value. In India, bay leaves are widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani systems of healing.

The leaves are oval, glossy, and dark green, releasing a subtle aroma when crushed or cooked. They are commonly used to flavour rice, soups, curries, and sauces. Historically, bay leaves symbolised wisdom and victory in ancient Greece and Rome, where scholars and champions wore laurel wreaths.
