JAIVITRI

Jaivitri, known as Mace in English, is a vibrant, aromatic spice obtained from the reddish-orange lacy covering of the nutmeg seed (Myristica fragrans). Native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, Jaivitri is now cultivated in India, Sri Lanka, and the Caribbean. It belongs to the Myristicaceae family and is valued for its warm, delicate aroma that is slightly milder and more floral than nutmeg. In India, Jaivitri is used widely in culinary traditions, Ayurvedic preparations, and traditional healing practices.

The harvesting of Jaivitri is a meticulous process. Once the nutmeg fruit ripens, it splits open to reveal the seed surrounded by a crimson aril. This aril is carefully removed, dried, and becomes the spice known as mace. Its deep colour and sweet-spicy fragrance have made it a prized addition to curries, sweets, and masala blends, as well as a traditional remedy for digestive and nervous disorders.

In Ayurveda, Jaivitri is known for its Vata and Kapha-balancing qualities and is believed to promote digestion, improve appetite, and calm the mind. It is rich in essential oils like myristicin, eugenol, and safrole, along with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins that contribute to its potent therapeutic properties.
