The scientific name of Safed musli is Chlorophytum arundinaceum. This plant belongs to the family Liliaceae.
The plant has tuberous roots and sub-erect stem with a rosette of long leaves that grows from a thick rhizome. The plant possesses yellow and white small flowers, and black seeds exist within pod. Root tubers are used for medicinal purpose. The herb is grown in rainy season and in bright sunlight, in tropical and subtropical regions. More than hundred species of this plant exist all over the world in which more than ten are found in India. All these species differ from one another and are commercially sold in India as Safed musli.
Chlorophytum arundinaceum has been used in the Indian traditional system of medicine to improve the general state of reproductive health and stress-related disorders. It is widely found in Chota Nagpur, Himalayas, and Aravalli hills, Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Gujrat.
