STAR ANISE

STAR ANISE

Star Anise, known as Chakra Phool in Hindi, is an aromatic spice derived from the star-shaped fruit of the Illicium verum tree. Native to the evergreen forests of southern China and Vietnam, Star Anise is a visually striking spice with eight-pointed pods, each containing a glossy brown seed. It belongs to the Schisandraceae family and is prized not only for its warm, licorice-like flavour but also for its wide range of medicinal and therapeutic benefits.

In India, Chakra Phool holds an important place in both culinary traditions and herbal medicine. It is commonly used in spice blends such as garam masala and panch phoron, and in Ayurveda, it is valued for its Vata and Kapha-balancing properties. Traditionally, it has been used to ease digestive discomfort, improve respiratory function, and promote relaxation after meals. The essential oil extracted from the fruit, known as anethole, gives it its characteristic aroma and many of its medicinal qualities.

Star Anise is rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, linalool, shikimic acid, and anethole, making it both antioxidant and antimicrobial. Interestingly, shikimic acid, one of its key bioactive compounds, is used in the pharmaceutical synthesis of antiviral drugs, highlighting its potent therapeutic potential.

Nutritional Value of Star Anise

  • Vitamins: Star anise provides small amounts of essential vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and several B-complex vitamins. These nutrients support immunity, skin health, and energy metabolism.
  • Minerals: It contains beneficial minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and manganese. These minerals help in maintaining strong bones, improving blood circulation, and supporting enzyme function.
  • Antioxidants: Star anise is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols that exhibit strong antioxidant properties. These compounds protect cells from oxidative stress, promote youthful skin, and boost overall vitality.
  • Essential Oils: The spice is abundant in aromatic compounds such as anethole, linalool, and shikimic acid, the last of which is known for its antiviral properties. These oils also give star anise its distinctive sweet, licorice-like aroma.

Relieves Cough & Congestion: Its expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties help loosen mucus and clear airways, providing relief from cough, cold, and bronchitis.

Acts as a Natural Antiviral: The presence of shikimic acid and anethole helps strengthen the body’s defence mechanisms and may assist in preventing viral infections.

Improves Sleep & Relaxation: Traditionally used in herbal teas, Star Anise has mild sedative properties that promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

Regulates Hormonal Balance: The phytoestrogens in Star Anise may help balance hormones, particularly beneficial for women experiencing menstrual irregularities or menopausal symptoms.

Star Anise is generally safe when used in small culinary or therapeutic amounts. However, it is essential to use Chinese Star Anise (Illicium verum) and avoid Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum), which is toxic. Pregnant and lactating women should consult a healthcare expert before using concentrated extracts or supplements. Consumed in moderation, Chakra Phool is both a flavourful spice and a traditional healer that supports digestion, immunity, and overall wellness.
